LATEST CONFIRMED CASES OF COVID-19 IN SOUTH AFRICA (9 December 2021)

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service, continues to provide laboratory-based surveillance to inform the public health response towards COVID-19 in South Africa.

Today the institute reports 22 391 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 093 452. This increase represents a 29.8% positivity rate. 

As per the National Department of Health, a further 22 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 90 060 to date.

19 988 045 tests have been conducted in both public and private sectors as per the table below.

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN

The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (53%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (12%). Western Cape accounted for 10%; North West accounted for 6%; Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga each accounted for 5% respectively; Eastern Cape accounted for 4%; and Northern Cape accounted for 1% of today’s new cases. The cumulative number of cases by province are shown in the table below:

The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is 29.8% which is higher than yesterday (26.8%). The 7-day average is 25.7% today, which is higher than yesterday (24.6%).
