LATEST CONFIRMED CASES OF COVID-19 IN SOUTH AFRICA (15 June 2022)

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service, continues to provide laboratory-based surveillance to inform the public health response towards COVID-19 in South Africa.

Today the institute reports 1,903 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 981 739. This increase represents an 8.5% positivity rate.

Today, the NDoH reports 26 deaths, and of these, 10 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 101,576 to date.

25,537,597 tests have been conducted in both public and private sectors as per the table below.

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN

The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (31%) followed by Western Cape (21%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 13%; Eastern Cape accounted for 10%; Free State and North West each accounted for 6% respectively; Mpumalanga accounted for 5%; Northern Cape accounted for 4%; and Limpopo accounted for 3% of today’s cases. The cumulative number of cases by province are shown in the table below:

The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is 8.5%, and is higher than yesterday (6.8%). The 7-day average is 7.3% today, and is lower than yesterday (7.4%). The 7-day moving average daily number of cases has decreased.
