Whole-Genome Sequencing for Global Foodborne Disease Surveillance

The Centre for Enteric Diseases, NICD is the coordinator for PulseNet Africa, which is part of PulseNet International, a global network dedicated to laboratory-based surveillance for foodborne diseases.

  • Public health laboratories around the world are moving together towards the use of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to improve detection and response to foodborne illnesses and outbreaks.
  • A global standard method for primary sequence data analysis is adopted, which will facilitate the sharing of information within laboratories to support surveillance and outbreak response.
  • Common steps for implementation of WGS and the standard method are agreed.
