The most recent positive Ebola Virus Disease case has been confirmed on the 29 December 2014 in Glosgow, United Kingdom (UK). The case is a health-care worker who returned from volunteering at an Ebola Treatment Centre in Sierra Leone. The patient has been isolated and is receiving treatment. Moreover, Public health authorities are now investigating all possible contacts.
1. Countries with widespread and intense transmission (Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone)
As at 02 January 2015 for Liberia, 04 January 2015 for Guinea and Sierra Leone, a cumulative total of 20 712 EVD cases (laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspected) including 8 220 deaths with an overall case fatality rate (CFR) of 40% have been reported.
- Guinea reported 2 775 cases (2 471 confirmed, 282 probable, 22 suspected) with 1 781 deaths (CFR: 64%)
- Liberia reported 8 157 cases (3 118 confirmed, 1 816 probable and 3 223 suspected) with 3 496 deaths (CFR: 43%)
- Sierra Leone reported 9 780 cases (7 602 confirmed, 287 probable, 1 891 suspected) with 2 943 deaths (CFR: 30%)
A summary of case numbers reported in the current EVD outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone is shown in Table 1. Figure 1 shows the geographic distribution of the current EVD outbreak in West Africa.

2. Countries with an initial case or cases, or with localised transmission
To date six countries have reported a case or imported cases from countries with intense transmission: Nigeria, Senegal, Spain, Mali, United States of America (USA) and United Kingdom (UK).
The EVD outbreaks in Senegal, Nigeria and Spain were declared over on 17 October, 19 October and 2 December 2014 respectively. Table 2 summarises the number of EVD cases and deaths in Mali and UK.
USA: As at 14 December 2014, four cases and one death have been reported.
Mali: As at 04 January 2015, eight cases including six deaths have been reported. The most recent cases are not related to the first EVD-positive case-patient.
UK: As at 04 January 2015, one case has been reported with no deaths.
