The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) welcomed the Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on 1 June, at the Sandringham campus; this was a great honour as it is not every day that the minister visits the organisation. The minister welcomed the newly elected Members of the board of directors to their first two day board meeting and appointed Prof Barry Schoub as the new Chairperson. The announcement will assist the organisation in fulfilling its mandate and further propel it in becoming a leading diagnostic pathology provider globally.
As an organisation, the NHLS is making great strides in improving its challenges, thanks to the minister’s intervention. An example of this improvement is in the area of staffing, as the total staff component has started to increase.
The minister emphasised that the NHLS as a health care service provider, needs leadership, which has advanced pathology experience and qualifications. Furthermore he said that the board composition may change, but the NHLS’ mandate and core values will retain enduring relevance.

In addition, the board will work closely with the Minister of Health, Executive Management and employees in aligning the organisation’s strategic objectives with government strategies, and policies of the Department of Health.
