Risk assessments are the foundation on which the control of occupational health and safety risks are based. It is therefore essential that all occupational health and safety (OHS) practitioners should be proficient in this technique.

A one-day training course in OH&S risk assessment techniques has been presented to a total of 276 Occupational Health and Safety Co-ordinators in the Free State, KwaZulu Natal, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provincial Occupational Health Units.

The course is designed to provide the co-ordinators with practical guidance and a set of risk assessment tools so that, after the course, they will be able to carry out a basic risk assessment in their own workplaces. The course presenters encourage interactive discussion and this has been very well received. Each delegate answers a short examination at the end of the course to determine whether they have absorbed the information presented.


As an integral part of the course, all participants are given a risk assessment project to complete in their own workplaces. Certificates are given to delegates who successfully complete the course.
